Our mission
At Northern Dutchess Day Care, our mission is to provide nurturing, high-quality early education for toddlers through five-year-olds. Rooted in the principles of Forest and Nature Preschool, we support each child’s unique development while inspiring a lifelong love of learning and a deep respect for all living things—great and small.
Together we grow.
Growth happens best in partnership. At Northern Dutchess Day Care, we foster a warm, supportive environment where children feel safe to explore, take risks, and develop at their own pace. Our experienced staff work closely with parents and caregivers to nurture each child’s curiosity, confidence, and sense of belonging. Through meaningful relationships, play, and connection with nature, we help children grow into compassionate, capable learners.

Priscilla Gideon
— Executive Director
Priscilla Gideon is a University Scholar Honors Graduate of Princeton University, with two Masters’ Degrees from Columbia. She is a lifetime member of The Actors Studio, an award winning short fiction writer, and, little known fact…an Irish citizen!
Priscilla’s secret to a lifetime working with children is a very active inner child. Joy and a sense of wonder are at the heart of everything she does.

I love watching children explore nature and light up with excitement as they learn. Teaching is especially rewarding when I see their enthusiasm and growth, whether I’m reading stories aloud or guiding them through new challenges. Outside the classroom, I enjoy reading, walking, and cooking. Cats are my favorite companions—and vanilla ice cream is my go-to treat!

I love seeing children’s imaginations expand through nature and creative play. Teaching is rewarding because every day brings a new moment of growth—whether it’s learning a letter, discovering something in nature, or diving into a fun sensory activity. Outside of work, I enjoy reading thrillers and fantasy novels, drawing, and swimming. Dogs are my favorite companions, and vanilla ice cream is my simple indulgence.

Our Board of Directors
Samantha Teppper, Board Chair
Samantha Tepper, Chair of the NDDC Board, is a senior brand marketing and PR leader with 10+ years’ experience in global lifestyle brands. A Hudson Valley native and mother of two daughters (ages 5 and 1), she brings her expertise in messaging strategy and community engagement to NDCC’s mission of advancing early childhood education. In addition to Chair duties, Samantha serves on the board’s Fundraising committee.
Emma Maitland, Board Vice Chair
Emma Hanly has spent over 13 years in real estate and is the founder of Wholym!lk, an organic plant-based milk company. With deep family roots in Rhinebeck dating back to the 1950s, Emma is passionate about contributing to the local community and supporting early childhood education. She brings her background in business, entrepreneurship, nutrition, and communications to Northern Dutchess Daycare. Emma lives in Salt Point with her young daughter and enjoys nature, cooking, yoga, and animals.
Daniel Anderson, Board Treasurer
Dan Anderson, Treasurer of NDDC, is a PMP-certified Project Manager and grant writer. At Habitat for Humanity, he has secured $1.45M in 2024 grants and continues to lead affordable housing projects. He brings expertise in finance, operations, fundraising, and systems management. His son is an NDDC graduate. Dan also leads the board’s Finance committee.
Brendan Charney, Board Secretary
Brendan Charney, NDDC Secretary, is a media and technology attorney who specializes in helping clients find practical solutions to content and platform risks. He is currently in-house at Meta Platforms, serving as a Product Counsel for the Creators & Publishers team. He is licensed to practice law in California and the District of Columbia, and registered in-house counsel in New York. His son is a proud NDDC student. Brendan serves on the board’s Finance committee.
Wendy Maitland, Board Member
Supporting affordable early childhood education benefits children, parents, businesses, and the overall economy by improving academic and life outcomes, increasing parental employment, strengthening the workforce, and promoting equity are of paramount importance to our society, in my opinion. NDDCC's mission of providing nature-based, high quality, nurturing education is unparalleled and creates a lasting imprint on children and their families. It's also an essential resource for our community, which is lacking in options for affordable, high quality early childcare and education.
Corryn Carey, Board Member
Corryn Carey, NDDC Board Member, is a Project Executive with Gilbane Building Company with 18+ years in construction management. A mom of two girls (ages 7 and 3, one at NDDC), she contributes her expertise to the center’s expansion projects and long-term growth
Mimi Joh-Carnella, Board Member
Mimi Joh-Carnella, NDDC Board Member, is a longtime arts advocate and educator who values community, culture, and connection. Now based in Rhinebeck with her husband, mother, and dog Molly, she is also a proud mother of three grown children living across the U.S. and Canada.
Michele Sherman-Entner, Board Member
Michele Sherman-Entner, NDDC Board Member, is an active member of the Rhinebeck community who brings her passion for supporting families and children’s education to NDDC’s mission of expanding access to high-quality early childhood care and education.
A longtime Rhinebeck resident, Michele and her husband raised their two children here. She worked for 25 years as one of the executive directors of her family’s business in New York City. Michele holds a master’s degree in Creative Arts and Learning from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Training
All staff complete a minimum of 15 hours per year of New York State–regulated training, including but not limited to CPR, First Aid, Shaken Baby Syndrome, Child Abuse and Maltreatment, and Child Development. Each staff member is fingerprinted and cleared by New York State and serves as a mandated reporter.
Our child-to-teacher ratios are 1:5 for toddlers and 1:7 for our Mixed Age Classroom. All teachers hold at least a two-year degree in Early Childhood Education, with several possessing higher-level degrees.
Our staff’s dedication to the field of early education is deeply valued and widely respected by the families we serve and the broader community.
Our History
Founded in 1970, Northern Dutchess Day Care has served generations of families in Rhinebeck as the area’s first and only non-profit childcare center. For over five decades, we've provided consistent, dependable care to working families—adapting with the times while staying rooted in community values.
In 2025, with the support of parents and local advocates, Northern Dutchess Day Care returned to independent operation. Today, we remain committed to our legacy of nurturing young children in a safe, caring environment—now enriched by a nature-based model that reflects the needs and rhythms of the children we serve.
